Tiger Brands, South Africa’s largest food producer, has significantly expanded its footprint in township markets, increasing its reach to over 71,000 stores—a nearly 50% rise this year. This strategic move aims to tap into underserved areas, with a goal to reach 130,000 stores, including spaza shops and mini-marts, within five years. Townships are vital to the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, with over 70% of households purchasing groceries and other products from these informal stores. Tiger Brands’ initiative has already improved product distribution and availability by over 90% in these regions. The township market contributes R184 billion to the FMCG sector and presents substantial growth opportunities, as its growth rate outpaces urban trade. The company plans to offer affordable, quality products tailored to local consumer needs, reinforcing its commitment to serving diverse communities across South Africa
